Alabama Sex Offender Apprehended In Texas
A registered sex offender was arrested in Austin, Texas, after failing to appear for a court date in Elmore County, Alabama, according to the U.S. Marshall Service. Andre Cardale Underwood, 40, of Birmingham was identified as the suspect who was charged with child sexual assault with a victim under the age of 12 years. Underwood was indicted in Alabama in January of 2010, and his plea date was set for May 2011, which he did not show up for. Authorities acted upon a tip that he was making an overnight drive to Austin and apprehended him at an apartment complex. Underwood is awaiting extradition back to Alabama. After 12 Years, Man Finally Convicted on Criminal Charges
According to the Columbia Tribune, a man who had been evading police for criminal charges for over 7 years was finally sentenced on June 6. Kory D. Smith, 35, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to a number of criminal charges. Authorities said that Smith used at least 15 different aliases to avoid prosecution for his criminal charges, which ranged from robbery to first-degree assault. On December 27, CrimeStoppers in Boone County Missouri contacted police with a tip that Smith was in the area. Smith was picked up shortly after and had several outstanding warrants, including one for probation violation in Dallas. Smith was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in Dallas County. Smith had previously served time in a Texas prison under the alias Michael Jermil Wilson.
Texas Candidate Elected Despite Criminal Charges
According to KHOU News, Matt Smith is facing criminal charges of driving while intoxicated. What makes this case interesting is that he has been elected the mayor of Argyle, Texas, while fighting the pending criminal charges. Argyle is a small town of approximately 3,000 people located about 40 miles northwest of Dallas. Smith received 253 of the 493 votes cast in mayoral race, and he was able to defeat the incumbent. In an email sent to the Denton Record-Chronicle, Smith said that he was honored to serve his fellow citizens. Smith was arrested for driving while intoxicated last January. His attorney, Rick Hagen, says that the case is pending and they plan to dispute the criminal charges.
